A definition of entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is a way of thinking, a way of feeling and a way of acting.

Entrepreneurs see opportunities and seek solutions. Entrepreneurs are passionate in making what is possible a reality. Entrepreneurs grasp the whole of a business, not just the parts; are focused in their commitment and immediate in their actions.

  1. Since your Blog title is “The Entrepreneurial Professor,” my question is: can entrepreneurship be taught? I’m certain how to write a business plan can be taught. And some of the successful tactics in raising money can be learned. But I think entrepreneurship – like leadership – is a gene you are born with or aren’t. I think you can teach someone who has the risk tolerance to be an entrepreneur some tools to be more successful, but you can’t teach “the vision thing” to those who are afraid to look outside their comfort zone.

  2. The "vision thing" isn't a singular characteristic of entrepreneurship. Visionaries are found in religion, politics and many other areas of society. All of these professions have well established paths of education and training.

It is possible to be successful at any endeavor without education (sometimes it is better to be lucky than smart). Education enhances you chances of success.

The most common reason people become entrepreneurs is not because they have a "vision" but because they can't (won't) work for others. Entrepreneurship education will help you improve your thinking and your actions. Consequently your feelings (passion for business, desire to succeed)will improve.
